How Art Elevates Design and the Power of Collaboration

Hello! I’m Gia Moody, and I’m thrilled to be one of the panel artists at this year’s Festival, where I’ll be discussing how art can elevate your design projects and the essential steps to successfully collaborate with an artist for commission work.

With over 25 years of experience in the hospitality industry as an interior designer, I have a deep understanding of how aesthetics and design intersect. The magic of interior design lies not just in choosing the right furniture, fabrics, or wall colors, but in how these elements come together to create a cohesive and inviting space. And at the heart of this harmony is the art that adorns the walls.

Elevating Interior Design with Art

Art has the power to transform a space, adding that final, perfect touch that brings a room to life. Whether it’s a soft, neutral painting that offers a sense of calm or a vibrant, dramatic piece that becomes the focal point, art can help convey the mood and purpose of a room. Paintings, drawings, and sculptures are not just decorative—they’re an essential union of functionality and aesthetic appeal in interior design.

As designers, we face countless challenges throughout the design process, from concept to completion. It may seem effortless, but the reality is far more complex. In our demanding world, having a reliable team is crucial to meet deadlines and ensure client satisfaction. That’s where collaboration with artists comes into play.

The Importance of Collaboration

As artists, we understand more than just color and form; we grasp the bigger picture—your vision. We are experts in translating your design concepts into tangible art that enhances the overall aesthetic of your project.

Collaborating with an artist on a commission doesn’t have to be daunting. In fact, it’s often a straightforward process, especially when the client already admires the artist’s work. Typically, a designer or client will approach me with a request, such as creating a larger version of a piece they love. This initiates a dialogue where we explore how to best integrate the artwork into the design.

Here’s how the collaboration process typically unfolds:

1. Selection: The designer selects one or two pieces that resonate with the project. We then discuss the specific requirements—size, color palette, framing, and timeline—to ensure that the artwork aligns perfectly with the design vision.

2. Payment: I require a 50% deposit upfront, with the remaining 50% due upon completion. This is usually coordinated through the designer, who handles the financials on behalf of the client.

3. Process: Once the details are agreed upon, I create initial sketches or small paintings to capture the agreed concept. These are shared with the client for approval before moving on to the larger commission.

4. Canvas: I personally prepare my canvases or wood panels to achieve the perfect surface, hand-gessoing each one. This meticulous preparation is crucial to the final outcome, especially for pieces requiring a smooth, glass-like finish. As the painting progresses, I keep the designer updated, offering studio visits or video previews.

5. Completion: After the painting reaches its final stage, I invite the designer and client for a review. Once approved, I deliver the piece to the framer, where the designer and I ensure that the framing complements the artwork and the overall design.

This collaborative process is truly rewarding. The designer achieves the exact creative expression they envisioned, the client receives a bespoke piece of art tailored to their space, and I have the satisfaction of seeing my work become an integral part of a beautifully designed room. It’s a win-win situation for everyone involved.

Art is more than just decoration—it’s a powerful tool that can elevate a design from ordinary to extraordinary. By working together, designers and artists can create spaces that are not only visually stunning but also deeply resonant with the people who inhabit them.

Thank you for considering the value that art brings to your design projects. I look forward to the opportunity to collaborate with you in creating something truly special.
